Technology Readiness Level (TRL) Assessment
– Overview
The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) Assessment is a structured framework designed to evaluate the maturity of technologies — from initial concept to market-ready innovation.
At BITS BioCyTiH Foundation, we implement a standardized TRL evaluation process to help innovators, startups, and researchers quantify their technology’s progress, identify gaps, and accelerate their journey from idea to implementation.
Our TRL framework is aligned with global best practices while being tailored to India’s academic, industrial, and research ecosystem.
– Purpose of TRL Assessment
- To determine the developmental stage of a technology or product.
- To provide objective and transparent validation for innovation maturity.
- To assist innovators and organizations in strategic decision-making and funding readiness.
- To establish a common language between researchers, industry, and policymakers for technology transfer and commercialization.
TRL Levels at a Glance

– TRL Assessment Process
Our assessment follows a four-stage structured flow, ensuring clarity and accountability at each step:
1) Fill in the Questionnaire & Upload Required Documents
Applicants provide detailed information

2) Internal Assessment & Categorization
Technologies are initially reviewed and classified into one of five domains:
- Electronics, Communication & Computer Science
- Mechanical & Design Systems
- Biology & Life Sciences
- Materials & Manufacturing
- Others / Miscellaneous

3) Subject Expert Assessment
Each submission undergoes a detailed evaluation by domain-specific experts, assessing technical feasibility, validation level, scalability potential, and innovation depth.
4) TRL Certification & Feedback
Based on expert review, the technology is assigned a TRL rating (1–9) along with a comprehensive feedback report highlighting strengths, readiness gaps, and recommended next steps.
